I saw what America is and I believe in what this country can be. We are here tonight to say that that is not the America we believe in. But we know that this is exactly what's wrong with our politics. It's a status quo that extends beyond any particular party and right now that status quo is fighting back with everything it's got, with the same old tactics that divide and distract us from solving the problems people face, whether those problems are health care that folks can't afford or a mortgage they cannot pay.

We may not get there in one year, or even one term, but America — I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after their children fall asleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage, or pay their doctor's bills, or save enough for college.

"We all have to start with the premise that each of our fellow citizens loves this country just as much as we do, that they value hard work and family, just like we do, that their children are just as curious and hopeful and worthy of love as our own." "For white Americans it means acknowledging … that when minority groups voice discontent, they're not just engaging in reverse racism or practising political correctness. "Politics is a battle of ideas. That's how our democracy was designed," he said. In a speech lasting nearly an hour, Mr Obama spoke about the need for bolder action on climate change, for reforms that provided economic equality for all and for all people to broaden their world view in the face of social media and fake news. "If you're disappointed by your elected officials, grab a clipboard, get some signatures and run for office yourself."
